About the unit: The Highfield Family and Adolescent Unit is a purpose built NHS
Unit situated in the grounds of the Warneford Hospital, close to Oxford City Centre. An
eclectic psychiatric service is provided, based on a model of consultation, outpatient,
day-patient and inpatient treatment. The Unit undertakes the assessment and treatment of
adolescents with a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including emotional disorders,
psychoses, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders and neuropsychiatric
disorders. For inpatients, day patients and outpatients, treatment programmes are
individually tailored to the adolescent's needs and developmental status. In line with the
diverse population of patients served, a wide range of treatments is provided. An
intensive inpatient assessment and treatment programme is available. This can offer major
benefits in selected cases and is only recommended after a thorough assessment by the
Specialist Highgfield Team. All patients have individualised programmes supervised by a
multidisciplinary case team. Thorought the adolescent's admission, close liaison with
local services is maintained. This provides for a smoother and quicker return home and to
the community. The Unit has active teaching and research programmes and maintains close
links with the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry. The Unit aims to provide a
consistently high quality of treatment and care. All clinical work is regularly supervised
by experienced staff and the work of the Unit is subject to Audit by the Department of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. |
