The impact of cancer is far greater than the 10 million new cancer cases worldwide each year. Many patients remain out of sight of the health services due to societal stigma and lack of resources to diagnose, treat and support. Regardless of the prognosis, cancer is still a cause of anxiety and depression in more than one-third of the cancer patients. Cancer has a profound effect on the function of the family in both social and economic terms. Across our globe we experience inequalities and differences in all aspects of cancer. Cancer incidence and survival are related to socio-economic status but also on the individual level we distinguish between individual differences and effects of the cancer experience. Studying and understanding the psychological, cultural and social differences in cancer patients and their families is of vital importance. The theme of the Seventh World Congress of Psychosocial Oncology in Copenhagen: "Understanding diversities — development of strategies for psychosocial oncology", reflects the research agenda, the need for clinical guidelines for psychosocial care of cancer patients and their families and the multidisciplinary effort that is an essential prerequisite of the patients and their families. CONGRESS DATES: The Seventh World Congress of Psychosocial Oncology in Copenhagen will commence on Wednesday 25 August and conclude on Saturday 28 August 2004. VENUE: The Royal Academy of Architecture is situated in the middle of the Medieval Royal Naval headquarters in the centre of Copenhagen. The old ship mill founded 1829 and now fully restored, following the famous Scandinavian architectural tradition, will create a special atmosphere and the Academy provides excellent meeting facilities.
