UPDATE ON THE TREATMENT OF
AFFECTIVE DISORDERS
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Modena, Italy May, 31 June,1 2002
Dipartimento Misto di Psichiatria e Salute Mentale Azienda Policlinico Universitaria di Modena Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia
Psychiatry is breaking from the often undisciplined psychological models and rather impoverished and deterministic biological model, aligning with sophisticated views of brain and behaviour that give weight to both genes and environment. Such models are beginning to provide a platform from which to understand the influences of genes, experience, illness, drugs and psychotherapy on the structure and function of the brain across the life cycle. The sequencing of the human genome and the mass of information provided from the new imaging technologies are producing an enormous, and continually expanding, knowledge base for psychiatry. This information, integrated with the accumulating evidence on the efficacy of psychotherapeutic techniques and pharmacological treatments, will extraordinarily improve our capacity to understand and treat mental illness. The goal of this meeting is to discuss some of the recent findings in basic and clinical psychiatry and to present original experiences on the treatment models and settings in the field of affective disorders.
